A Special Kind of Love

At a young age it became very clear to me that I had an interest and special love. My special love revolves around students with special needs/disabilities and having the advantage to work with them. I am an independent girl who has always been a strong advocate to erase the "R" word. My name is Matisse Zamora and I come from a city close to Houston, Texas called The Woodlands. Where I come from, it is considered a bubble full of wealth and ignorance. The ignorance comes to play with a few of my classmates in high school who thought it was socially acceptable to use the "R" word as an adjective for something bad. I can not stress enough how morally incorrect that is.

Everybody has their own kind of disability one way or another, which is why everybody deserves to be treated with equal love and respect. This is important and matters to me because anytime I hear someone use the "R" word out of context and use it as an insult shows how there needs to be more awareness raised to spread the word to end the word. At the early age of seven, I was one of the two kids selected at my elementary school to serve as a buddy in the Best Buddies program for the special education department. The Best Buddies program allowed students to help assist the life skills students in their classrooms with their work and activities. That classroom is where I spent all of my free time. Without being said, I knew this was my calling and dream.

As I stated earlier, a special love is needed for the profession I have chosen, and that is to become a Special Education teacher. Thankfully, growing up with my best buddies in the program, I developed life-long friendships and I also had this gut instinct since the second grade that my future will revolve around children with the biggest hearts. In order to accomplish any of this, I will have to work hard to get to where I want to be. My plan is to graduate from A&M University with my bachelor's. My mother is also in the education field and I strive to succeed just like her and make her proud because she also influenced me to take this route. Once I finally come to the end of the road and achieve all of this, I picture my mother helping me set up my classroom in the summer for my own set of students.

  4. Matisse, My wife is a Special Education teacher at Texas A&M Consolidated High School. In fact, we met at Camp Barnabas, a summer camp for kids with disabilities and their siblings located in southern Missouri. We have some great stories from those summers with our campers. I bless your journey forward, and I bless you in advance with loads of PATIENCE and ENERGY.

  5. This was so sweet and it made me tear up. We need more people in the world like you, I use to hate walking in the hallways and see the people with special needs get treated some way by others , it was horrible. But, I love where you going in your future and I hope that everything goes well for you!
